Open Space and Creativity

We tend to associate an environment which empower creativity with open space offices, a lot of informal meeting and continuous sharing of information between people.

We do the same to enable innovation.

I tend to think that the creative process takes place inside ourselves and at it’s core there is a recombination of knowledge. Innovation process is really similar, although the results is different (Creativity is about thinking new things, Innovation is about doing new things).

But we are human and we need to face our fear of judgement; at an early development stage of a new idea it’s difficult to speak up and invite everyone to see what you are creating.

It’s like learning to play the piano. Until you develop at least some basics, you’ll probably never try to play in a crowded environment. It’s the same with ideas, you need to refine ideas in order to be ready to show your progress to the world.

Also, be in an open space environment led to more distraction, and a creative mind need to focus and to take the entire project in the mind, to be able to find a “solution”.

The space to share suggestions and knowledge should be different to the space to develop new and creative ideas.

On the other hand open space could be really effective in customer supports teams, to share in seconds ideas and suggestions.

A perfect environment “one fits all” doesn’t exist, but using new tools and practice in the right way can improve every organization.
